Canoe Country Flora: Plants and Trees of the North Woods and Boundary Waters
Published in Paperback by Pfeifer-Hamilton Pub (April, 1996)
Average review score:

Entertaining and informative, if somewhat oversizedA great read, either at home or in the woods. Sparky describes many of the trees and plants you're likely to encounter in the Northwoods and adds historical uses, points of interest and random facts. Each entry is accompanied by a decent line drawing. The book is a bit awkward for a field guide (9x8) but it's such an enjoyable book to have along I always end up carrying it. Indespensible for Northwoods canoeing.

Cardiofitness
Published in Hardcover by The Toby Press LLC (10 October, 1999)
Average review score:

Thought-provoking and beautifulCardiofitness is an amazing novel: imaginative yet realistic, lovely and gritty. Alessandra Montrucchio got to the heart of every character while still exploring their flaws - self-doubt, frustration, fear, and loneliness. Stef is confident and cheerful, her strong exterior masking her insecurity. Tendina is growing into himself, escaping the nagging inadequacy of his home life by focusing on becoming something more. They are a surprising and somehow comfortable couple. This is an excellent book - I strongly recommend it.

The Carver's Art: Crafting Meaning from Wood
Published in Paperback by University Press of Kentucky (June, 1996)
Average review score:

An outstanding study of a folk artThis book shows the breadth and scope of meanings that are carved into wooden chains by Indiana craftsmen. Folklorist Simon Bronner begins his study with a simple question: Why would anyone spend hours and hours carving out wooden chains? The answers that he finds show that simple questions often have complex answers. Bronner provides a glimpse into the souls of the carvers as he reveals the significant aspects of the aesthetic and emotional dimensions of life history that are crafted into the art of the carvers.

Excellent relevant historical treatment of Swedish carvingCarving and Whittling: The Swedish Style is an excellent source for historical information of techniques and materials in the Swedish style of carving, as well as some information on other cultures' development of carving. One of my all time favorite carving books I have had the pleasure of reading and putting to use. Overall a great book and wonderful photos.

Learn from a master carver and teacherJim Sprankle, a carver of exceptional caliber, leads the reader through a step-by-step process in transforming a lifeless block of wood into a life-like work of art. No detail is left unmentioned, and the photographs provide a close-up view of the intricate carving and painting that make Sprankle's work highly prized. Carving and Painting the American Kestrel With Floyd Schulz
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (April, 2003)
Average review score:

Another great book from FloydThis is the best of the 'Carving & Painting' series of books, and should be on the shelf of every serious bird carver. Not only does it cover carving and painting techniques, but it provides some beautiful reference photos of male and female kestrels. It also discusses wood choices, tools, patterns, and design and composition. It's a lot of information at a very reasonable price!

Carving Architectural Detail in Wood: The Classical Tradition
Published in Paperback by Guild of Master Craftsman (June, 2001)
Average review score:

Elegant workThis work is very descriptive in both word and picture of architectural detail. It demonstrates methods of calculating the plan or measuring the details to permit you to lay out elegant but traditional carving projects. It has been a wonderful source of learning for me and a guide to several carving motifs. The author is publishing a second book that I am anxious to see.

Carving Bears and Bunnies
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (July, 1990)
Average review score:

Excellent Step-by-step instructions. The reason I really liked "Carving Bears and Bunnies" by Tom Wolfe, was the step-by-step instructions and color photographs. As a beginner they really helped me to get the proportions right on the carvings. I really enjoyed this book of Tom Wolfe's and I am hoping to get some other ones of his.

Carving Caricature Figures from Scratch
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (01 January, 2000)
Average review score:

A great way to learn caricature concepts........If you have been a caricature carver for a long time or just starting out, this book holds a wealth of information for you. All but the most advanced carvers will be able to put some tricks in their bag from this book.
Pete starts with just a piece of basswood and begins carving. You don't even need a bandsaw to do these projects. He takes you from blocking out the head and the body all the way through carving the eyes, mouth, ears, hands, clothing wrinkles, etc. The numerous color photos are presented well and there are enough close-ups to help you stay on track.
Let me end this review by stating that if you don't own Pete's first book "Carving Caricature Head & Faces" then you should. Pete's philosophy on caricature carving is that the head and face are the most important feature of the carving. While "Carving Caricature Figures from Scratch" does detail the head nicely, I think the first book will give you a lot more insight.
